PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

by Chris O’Neill

Welcome back to another year of renewing friendships in your interest sections, maybe trying out new sections and most importantly, working to achieve AAUW’s mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.  I am sharing the Presidency this year with Miki Lang, a former Southern Marin President whose past experience will be of great benefit to me and the branch.  She’s a great role model for those of you who were maybe more actively involved in AAUW in years past but not so much so recently.  We need your input and help.  The branch is only as vibrant as its members.  How are you going to be more involved this year?  You can start by coming to our kick-off Open House on September 15 and offering some of your time and talents to the Board.

This summer I came across a few news items that made me take a second look.  One was the statistic that while more women than men are registered to vote and more women than men actually do vote, in the 2004 Presidential election there still were approximately 22 million women who were eligible to vote but didn’t.  Think of the impact the votes of these non-voting women might have had on the election.  Go to www.aauw.org, join AAUW’s Action Network and join a network committed to mobilizing voters on issues affecting women.

There was a small article in the S.F. Chronicle about a former Cal State Fresno volleyball coach, Lindy Vivas, who, after litigation lasting three years, won a $5.85 million judgment for discrimination.  Her suit said that the school had not renewed her contract as a coach because she advocated for equal treatment of female athletes at the university.  This is happening 35 years after the passage of Title IX!  Currently the percentage of women’s teams coached by women is at its lowest point in recent history and the average salaries for coaches of women’s teams still trail those of coaches for men’s teams.  Ladies, we still have lots of work to do!  We can’t get complacent  but need to be vigilant.

Join our T.E.A.M. – Together Everyone Achieves More!  We’re ready to have you, the membership, help us make the coming year successful and productive
