Scholarship Fund

AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund   109 Oak Drive, San Rafael, California 94901

Every spring for more than 20 years, AAUW Marin has been giving scholarships to girls and women in our local community.  Since 1990 we have provided financial assistance to 32 women attending Dominican University and College of Marin. Additionally, for the past decade AAUW Marin and Southern Marin branches have sponsored 27 middle school girls at AAUW’s Tech Trek math and science summer camp at Stanford University.

To ensure a stable funding base for our local scholarships and enable them to continue indefinitely, in 2002 we established the non-profit 501(c)(3) AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund. Our goal for the Fund is to build sufficient principal so that the interest alone will fund our college scholarships.  Funds raised annually by AAUW Marin and earmarked for Tech Trek go through the Scholarship Fund so that a tax deduction is available to the donors.

For 2007-2008, we will award two college scholarships and sponsor four girls at Tech Trek camp.  Through various fundraisers and direct donations, we are continuing to build the principal in our endowment fund to ensure that these scholarships can continue year after year as our legacy to Marin County.

Examples of the college women, all top students with financial need, who have received our scholarship include:

--A cancer survivor who plans to work in the field of Gerontological Social Welfare

--A single parent, raised in multiple foster homes, who finds her passion in science & nursing

--A 1st-generation college student, raised by her grandmother in a village above the Arctic Circle

--A disabled woman studying to become a lawyer and specialize in disability rights law

Our middle school students return from Tech Trek camp with tales of the bat lady and the marine outing on the Bay and with testimonials of how this experience touched their lives:

--Attending Tech Trek taught me that it’s OK to be a nerd.

--Thanks to Tech Trek, I’ve learned to embrace my brains.

--The robotics project will help me pursue my future profession as a computer engineer.

Equity through education for women and girls is a cornerstone of AAUW’s mission. Please help us continue our commitment to Marin’s women students and make a generous, tax-deductible donation to the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund.  Please send your donation to the address at the top of this page.  Thanks to you we are making a difference!
